This easy collagen coffee recipe turns your everyday cup into a creamy, frothy protein latte in about 2 minutes. Use a blender for an ultra-creamy, coffee-shop style foam, or a handheld frother for a 20-second shortcut. It's naturally gluten-free, works with dairy or plant-based milk, and adds around 9 to 18g of protein depending on how many scoops you use.

Collagen coffee in a glass mug topped with thick milk foam and a dusting of cocoa powder.

I developed this recipe in my own kitchen, testing different collagen powders, milks and methods until I found the two that work every time. Good-quality collagen is almost tasteless, so your coffee still tastes like your coffee, just creamier and more filling. Many people add collagen to their coffee for skin, hair and joint health, and it's an easy way to add in some protein in before a busy morning.

You can go ultra-creamy with the blender method, or keep things simple with a quick handheld frother. Both methods dissolve the collagen beautifully without clumping. I definitely find it makes your morning coffee a lot more satisfying. For more easy food ideas for busy mornings, see all my Breakfast Recipes.

Ingredients for collagen coffee in small bowls: brewed coffee, collagen peptides, milk and sweetener.

    Ingredients

Find the full list and quantities in the recipe below.

Coffee - use your coffee of choice, a favorite roast, freshly brewed.

Collagen Peptides - I use grass-fed bovine or marine collagen as it dissolves better and has a cleaner taste. I recommend opting for an unflavored collagen.

Milk - use any variety of milk, dairy or plant based, whatever your preference. I find milk with a higher fat content froths better.

Sweetener - when sweetening the coffee I usually opt for unrefined sugar options like honey or maple syrup as they blend smoothly. You could also use date syrup or agave syrup. If using refined sugars you can use white sugar, or soft brown sugar for a deeper molasses flavor.

Power-Ups - add other ingredients to make your coffee even more satisfying. A little grass-fed butter, MCT oil or coconut cream adds richness and makes it more filling, and a pinch of cinnamon adds warmth without any sugar.

Garnish - I like to garnish my coffee with a sprinkle of cocoa powder, cacao or ground cinnamon.

    How to Make Collagen Coffee

Find the full printable recipe card below.

Method 1: The "Ultra-Creamy" Blender Version

This method emulsifies the fats and proteins, creating a thick, stable foam that feels like a latte.

Pour your hot coffee into a high-speed blender. Add the collagen, milk, and any optional sweetener, flavoring or power-ups.

Secure the lid and blend on high for around 15 seconds.

Pour into your favorite mug and watch the thick foam rise to the top. Sprinkle with cocoa powder to serve.

Method 2: The "20-Second" Handheld Frother Version

The perfect everyday shortcut that uses a simple handheld whisk/wand.

Pour your hot coffee into a mug, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Add the collagen peptides and any of the optional extras and stir briefly with a spoon. Pour in your milk.

Insert the handheld frother at a slight angle and turn it on. Froth for 20 seconds until a velvety micro-foam forms. Remove the frother, sprinkle on some cocoa powder and enjoy your instant protein latte.

Things I Learned While Testing This Recipe

    • Watch the heat: Collagen dissolves best in hot (not boiling) coffee. If your coffee is piping hot, let it sit for a minute before blending.
    • Stir or froth immediately: To avoid the collagen powder forming lumps, stir or froth as soon as you add the hot coffee.
    • The froth factor: For the thickest foam, use a milk with a higher fat content (like Oatly full fat or whole milk).
    • Don't overdo the scoop: Adding too much collagen powder can make the drink chalky, so only use 1-2 scoops.

How to Make This Recipe Work for You

When it comes to milk, you will get a better froth from milk with a higher fat content. I recommend full fat milk, or a barista blend oat milk. However feel free to use your milk of choice.

Swap sugar or sugary syrups for sugar free plant based sweeteners, try vanilla extract, cacao, or cinnamon powder.

Add fats for creaminess, MCT oil, coconut cream, ghee or grass-fed butter all give the coffee a silky texture.

A pinch of salt can deepen the flavor, and help reduce any bitterness in the coffee.

Here's What I'd Serve It With

Collagen coffee is great on its own, but for a proper protein breakfast I'd pair it with something savory like eggs or a frittata. These are my favorites from the site.

    • Burrata Toast with Hot Honey
    • Avocado Tostada with Fried Egg
    • High Protein Frittata with Cheese & Vegetables
    • Chili Scrambled Eggs
    • Peanut Butter & Jelly Overnight Oats
    • Chocolate Porridge

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does collagen change the taste of coffee?

High-quality collagen is pretty much flavorless, if you notice a taste it's more likely that it's a cheaper collagen powder, or the collagen hasn't fully dissolved.

Can I add collagen to iced coffee?

Yes you can, but I would recommend dissolving the collagen in hot water first to make a slurry, then adding that to your iced drink?

What is the best collagen for coffee?

Look for unflavored, hydrolyzed collagen peptides from grass-fed bovine or marine sources, as they dissolve easily and have a neutral taste.

In the US, I use Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides because it's easy to find at Target and Whole Foods. It's made from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine collagen, dissolves in hot or cold drinks, and is made without gluten or dairy. In England, I use WillPowders, the UK brand founded by Davinia Taylor. I'm a fan of her products and her story, and her collagen is made from grass-fed bovine collagen too.

    Does collagen break a fast?

Yes, collagen contains calories and protein so it will break a fast.

    Is collagen a complete protein?

No. Collagen is missing tryptophan, one of the essential amino acids, so it isn't a complete protein. It still adds protein to your coffee, but I wouldn't rely on it as your only source. Pair it with eggs, Greek yogurt or another protein-rich breakfast.
