    Burrata toast with hot honey has to be one of the best flavor combinations ever! Top crunchy sourdough toast with soft creamy burrata cheese then add a large drizzle of spicy hot honey. A delicious dish - and the best part - it's only 5 ingredients. Made in minutes, it's the perfect appetizer, light lunch, dinner or snack.

    This burrata recipe really elevates very simple ingredients. All you need is room temperature burrata cheese plus a simple homemade chili honey, which I make by combining runny honey and red pepper flakes, adding just a touch of heat. 

    What is burrata and what does it taste like?

    If you haven't yet tried it, Burrata is a semi-soft Italian cheese made with mozzarella and cream. The outer shell of the burrata is made from fresh mozzarella which is filled with more chopped mozzarella mixed with fresh cream.

    Burrata does not have a strong flavor of cheese, instead it has a milky, almost buttery flavor.

    Burrata Toast Ingredients

    Bread - for the best crunch and flavor I've opted for sliced sourdough bread, but you can use any variety of bread that you enjoy toasted; rye, wholegrain, granary or crusty white bread. 

    Burrata - I use a small ball of burrata cheese which you should be able to find in most larger stores. If you can't find burrata, a good quality ball of mozzarella or some whipped ricotta cheese would be the best alternatives. 

    Honey - I find that a good quality runny honey works best in this recipe as it is easy to combine with the seasoning. 

    Chili - I add some red pepper flakes to the honey for a nice kick of chili heat. 

    Flaky Salt - I always use flaky sea salt with this dish as it adds a great texture for extra crunch factor.

    How to Make Burrata Toast

    It's so simple!

    Butter the sourdough bread and cook in a hot skillet on both sides until toasted.

    Dry the burrata cheese well then place onto the hot toast and cut open to reveal the creamy insides. Spread over the toast for maximum coverage. 

    Drizzle with the hot honey made with honey and red pepper chili flakes and season well with sea salt and black pepper.

    What is Hot Honey?

    Hot honey is simply regular honey with added chili peppers or red pepper flakes. You can buy it ready made in larger stores. However, it takes seconds to make at home and that way you can adjust the chili heat to suit your own tastes.

    What is the difference between burrata and mozarella?

    Mozzarella is a soft cheese with a subtle flavor and an elastic texture. Whereas burrata is even softer and creamier. Think of burrata as next level mozzarella!

    Is Burrata served hot or cold?

    Like most cheeses, burrata is best served at room temperature, so I suggest removing it from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving.

    I prefer to serve burrata cold. However, you can bake burrata but only to warm it slightly. So keep the cooking time short as you don't want the burrata to burst and melt everywhere.

    What is inside burrata?

    The inside of burrata is filled with soft mozzarella pieces and fresh cream.

    What can I use as a burrata substitute?

    The closest substitute for burrata would be fresh mozzarella. You could also use feta cheese which also has a mild flavor and soft texture.

    Where can I buy burrata?

    You will find burrata in most good cheese shops, large grocery stores and at the farmers market. Trader Joes burrata has a bit of a cult following and is really good and fairly inexpensive too!

    How big is a ball of burrata?

    Burrata is sold in 8oz containers with 2 x 4oz burratas in each pot in the US. In the UK they are sold in 4oz (155g) containers with only one burrata.

    Variations & Substitutions

    I've topped my burrata toast with hot honey, but there are a whole variety of different flavors you can top this toast with. Here are some other burrata toast ideas:

    • Burrata avocado toast with a drizzle of hot sauce.
    • Burrata tomato toast with fresh basil.
    • Drizzle some freshly basil pesto over the burrata.
    • Top with thin slices of fruit - try stone fruits, strawberries and cherries.
    • Fold over some thin slices of prosciutto or salami.
    • Add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze.

    Tips & Tricks For Making Burrata Toast

    Pat the burrata a dry with a paper towel before serving - otherwise you risk soggy toast.

    Don't even think about serving this without salt. When it comes to burrata, proper seasoning is essential and is what really makes the sweet, salty and creamy flavors pop.

    Leftover hot honey can be stored in an airtight container on the counter top, ready to add a punch of sweet and spicy flavor to salads or sandwiches.

    How To Serve Burrata Toast

    This is a dish that is best served freshly made. Burrata toast makes a great breakfast, brunch or light dinner option. It is makes a healthy and nutritious snack. 

    How can I use up leftover Burrata?

    Burrata is great to use in appetizers, salads and sandwiches. It's also perfect to use in pasta dishes to add richness.

    Can you freeze burrata?

    Whilst you can freeze burrata, I don't recommend it as the freezing process changes the texture of the cheese. I prefer to enjoy burrata fresh when is has the best taste and texture.

    Ingredients
     
     

    • 1 slice Sourdough Bread - large, or 2 smaller slices
    • 1 tbsp Butter
    • 1 small ball Burrata - drained and patted dry with a paper towel
    • 2 tbsp Honey
    • ¼ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
    • Sea Salt and Black Pepper

    Instructions
     

    • Butter the bread, make sure the butter is evenly spread and reaches right to the edge of the bread.
    • Heat a skillet over a medium heat and toast the bread on each side until golden brown or to your liking.
    • Add the well drained and patted dry burrata to the toast.
    • With a sharp knife or a fork, open the burrata and arrange the gooey cheese over the toast.
    • In a small bowl stir together the honey and red pepper flakes.
    • Drizzle over the toast and burrata.
    • Season with sea salt and black pepper and serve immediately.
